Okay, so Labor Day is long past us now, a distant memory. Y'all do know what this means for the white shoes until next Easter (or Memorial Day, depending on who you ask around here), right?
If you are a new arrival from other parts and maybe don't have a clue what this is about, we love you - and welcome! Just be advised that we don't wear white shoes here year-round. Our cut-off date is Labor Day, and the next starting date is sometime in very late spring.
And if you have already innocently committed the blunder, here is comforting consolation for you. The late Princess Margaret, of British Royalty fame, showed up for a visit to Dallas, Texas one time (after Labor Day) wearing white shoes, and the faux pas sent Southern shock waves. Moral of the side-bar is this: If you have transgressed because you didn't know any better at the time, count yourself in good company.
And now you do know. Either way, I'm just the messenger, so don't shoot me. To quote Ouiser Boudreaux in Steel Magnolias, "I did NOT MAKE THE RULES".
And if you are wondering why I posted a black shoe instead of a white one at the top of this post, it is because Labor Day, as I mentioned in the opener, is long past us now. Rules are rules:-)
I’ve been out of the South for over 30 years, but I still have that rule ingrained into me.
In our neck of the Southern woods, the same rules also applied to patent shoes—only worn between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 😉
