Thank you for making this post. Back in November I saw Dungeness from afar. Mainly I saw the tower. While down that way I heard the story of how Jacqueline Kennedy took her children there to escape the world, and then how JFK Jr. pulled off his "secret" wedding. I intend to see it up close next time.
Tom, it is a magical place. The wedding was greatly aided by Carnegie descendant, Janet "Gogo" Ferguson, who still lives there. She is a "friend of a friend" who has loved and cared for Cumberland for decades. You will not be disappointed when you make the trip - but I was not kidding about the heat or the season. The summer months can actually be a little bit dangerous on Cumberland for a first-time visitor because of the extreme heat and sparse access to air-conditioning - so plan accordingly:-)))
"Glorious Ruins" is a proper description of the ruins of Dungeness. I would add... "Glorious Ruins of the Gilded Age." Traveled to Cumberland to photograph the wild horses (which I did) but got caught up with Dungeness. Captivating. Nice post Beth.
Cumberland island is on our “go to”places when we have visitors. It never disappoints, as the island is rich with history and characters. Your photos are beautiful.

Thank you. I will be sure to "summerize" myself and friends. Keep up the good work, Beth!

I love old ruins. They are so evocative and romantic.
