I have always been drawn to old barns, and something about the way Georgia photographer Steve Robinson captures them in pictures always makes me smile.
Tell the truth. Have you ever met an ugly barn? I don't think I have. They are all lovable, and each beautiful in its own way.
In terms of design, they have nothing to prove. They are built for a purpose, and always have been.
The houses to which they belong may be impressive Greek Revival, or exuberant Victorian, or heavily adorned Italianate - but the barns need only to plant their feet and be.
What is more - the older they get, the more impressive they become. Their skin shows its age. Their tin crowns turn to rust. All the more beautiful.
The one above stands in a pecan orchard in Worth County, Georgia, wrapping its strong arms around an old blue truck. The two of them seem to be saying "We came to do a job...and we did it...and we did it well."
Through the years, I have captured a few photos of old barns, but my hat is off to Robinson. Most all of his work is centered around southwest Georgia, where broad fields and pecan orchards sing harmony with the structures that inspire him. The results speak to anyone who has a soft spot for an old barn.
All photos by Steve Robinson.
there is something spiritually satisfying about an old barn
