If any of you who are not from around here have ever wondered what winter looks like in the South - here is one version. Camelias come in all colors - and they bloom in winter! They grow as shrubs, and the oldest ones can be as tall as a house. Cut on their branches and put into vases and pitchers of water, they bring the promise of spring and summer to our whiny, winter-weary Southern hearts:-))
This is one of three very old camellias that came with my 70-year-old house. My guess is that it is at least half a century old itself. I have tried pinning down the exact name (there are multiple varieties that bloom with what I would call “peppermint” colors), but I can’t tell you which one this is. I only know that it makes me happy.
The days around here are also getting noticeably just a little bit longer, which is even more salve for a winter soul. Spring does not dilly-dally in these parts, for which I am always grateful. And in the meantime, camellias:-))))
Camellias are one of those things that I always enjoyed on cooler days at Swan Lake Gardens
I have one just like yours Beth! It's very old and I don't know the name but it is so beautiful with its striped blossoms and also dark pink and solid light pink blooms as well 💖 🌸
