I love rolling through small towns and discovering treasures like this, especially when they find me instead of the other way around.
I had just left the wonderful luncheon at Oak Ridge Military Academy, sponsored by the Guilford Battle Chapter of the NSDAR to benefit the saving of historic Maple Glade.
Leaving the parking lot, I needed to turn left, but a few oncoming cars prompted me to turn right instead. A few seconds later, this gorgeous Queen Anne house smiled and waved at me through the trees.
Oakhurst, built in 1897, was designed by architect Frank P. Milburn, whose work is well known in both North and South Carolina, and includes the design of the South Carolina State Capital building.
Back here in North Carolina, he designed Oakhurst for Martin Hicks Holt, who, at the time, was the president of Oak Ridge Institute, which later became Oak Ridge Military Academy. Today it survives as the finest Queen Anne structure in Guilford County.
And had I turned left instead of right, I never would have known it was sitting half a block away.

Our friends own this lovely old home. They regularly invite us to house concerts for old time musicians in the front parlor. And there’s always a great pot luck dinner to follow!
Having lived in East Tennessee I immediately thought you were talking about Oak Ridge. There would finally realize you were not.
