I'm not sure which took my breath first - the antique sugar kettle fountain or the self-assured peacock striking a pose on the rim, but on this morning in Jefferson Island, Louisiana, the scene could not have been more perfect.
Made of cast iron in many sizes, sugar kettles were a necessity of sugar production in Louisiana during a day when automation had not yet arrived on the scene. Today, however, they have found a second act in these parts as planters, fire pits, and fountains - their rusty patina only adding to the charm.
Since my first sighting many years ago on a trip down River Road, I have longed for a sugar kettle in my garden. They are not cheap, however, much less lightweight. Shipping alone would probably cost me a year's worth of coffee beans. And I can't live without my coffee.
Hope springs eternal, however. One of these days I will find myself in Louisiana with a big empty truck, time on my hands, and money to spend. When that happens, some lucky sugar kettle will find a new home in North Carolina.
