Midway, Georgia is small, but they make up for it with a deep history that reaches well back before the American Revolution. Historic Midway Church, which adjoins this site, was built in 1792 after the British came through and burned the original structure, built by the earliest settlers in the 1750's. The 1792 church remains today.
Fast forward two hundred years, give or take, to the structure you see at the top of this post. It is actually a reproduction, built in the style known as Plantation Plain in 1959 to serve as the Midway Museum, which was founded to tell the story of Colonial Midway and the people - both enslaved and free - who helped build this nation. Two of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence, Dr. Lyman Hall and Button Gwinett, were members of Midway Church.
As for that church, it has been a favorite on Southern Voice for ten years and remains one of the prettiest old churches I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.
