The story of Crescent House has always been a favorite on this page, but it wasn't until one afternoon a couple of years ago that I paid my respects in person. Here is the story again for those of you who have never heard it.
Saving the South can happen in many different ways. In the case of Crescent House in Valdosta, Georgia, it happened because a few garden club ladies decided to pitch a hissy.
Colonel William S. West built Crescent House between 1897 and 1899. It was for many years the iconic structure of Valdosta - until some bright minds decided a wrecking ball might be a better idea.
At that point, a few members of one of the local garden clubs decided that pigs would sooner fly - and we all know what chance those pigs stand against women with their minds set.
Crescent House was saved, and today is home to not one but all of the garden clubs in Valdosta, Georgia. It is open to the public, too. So much for wrecking balls - and flying pigs.
