Hard times call for creative cooks. I can’t say for sure, but if I had to guess, I would say that the invention of chocolate gravy was one such result. Without an abundance of resources readily at hand, I can envision an enterprising country cook deciding one morning to go for the canister of Hershey’s Cocoa and presenting her children with a treat for breakfast. Biscuits and gravy have long been a given on Southern tables, so why not?
Regardless of the origin, word did eventually spread, and today there are several generations of Southerners who can claim they grew up on the stuff.
My own version, below, is simple and decadent - and I can no longer use the kids as an excuse. But does that stop me? Well, no. No it does not.
